Ireland: “Britain’s plans essentially violate international law”

by

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Cowney has said that the proposed legislation, introduced by Britain yesterday, is in fact a violation of international law and no one but London believes otherwise.

Irish Prime Minister Michal Martin warned Britain on Monday that a unilateral breach by London of post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland agreed with the EU would be “very serious”.

“The unilateral violation of the Protocol is very serious – an international agreement ratified by the British Parliament and approved by the Prime Minister,” Martin wrote on Twitter. “It focuses on the issue of trust,” he added.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Cowney said the proposed legislation introduced by Britain on Monday to circumvent many post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland was a violation of international law and no one but London believed anything different.

“It’s essentially a violation of international law if this bill becomes law. I have not met anyone outside the British government who believes that it is not a violation of international law when you deliberately do not implement an international treaty,” Coveni told RTE. .

Coweni added that he did not think there was a good reason for the move, as the European Union was trying to negotiate with Britain to find a compromise solution that could resolve the issues facing some companies because of the rules.
