Ukraine has lost a quarter of its crops

According to the Ukrainian authorities, the crop will be sufficient for domestic needs.

The extent of of cultivated land in Ukraine after the Russian army invaded the country on 24 February decreased by a quartersaid yesterday Monday to reporters in Kyiv o Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Taras Vysotsky.

He, however, predicted that the crop will be sufficient for domestic needswhich have decreased, since a large part of the population has left the country.

The agro-industry is affected by both hostilitiesas well as by him blockade of Ukrainian export ports by the Russian Navy, which reduced grain production for export, according to Mr. Vysotsky.

The Ukrainian deputy minister also said that farmers rely on less demanding crops, especially soybean seeds. The area in which soybeans are grown remains almost unchanged compared to the pre-war level.

In contrast, crops such as corn –55 million acres in 2021– have been reduced to 46 million acres today, clarified Mr. Vysotsky.

However, he did not provide specific data on wheat crops. Ukraine is one of the largest exporters of cereals in the world and the reduction in its production will have a very serious international impact.
