Twenty containerssome of which contained gold and money, were stolen in the port of Mansangio, in the west Mexicoas part of an operation that is described as “unprecedented” and “very serious”, according to the first data released yesterday, Monday, by the authorities.
This operation, which was also characterized as “robbery of the century” by some media, took place on June 5 in a private area of the main commercial port on the Mexican coast in the Pacific, but nothing had been learned until two days ago.
Official sources spoke of a spectacular way in which the robbers acted.
Heavily armed assailants neutralized the port security teams.
The group of robbers then used cranes and trucks for eight to ten hours to manage the containers, said Gustavo Adrian Hoya, security spokesman for the port state of Colima, where the port is located.
“They were very selective about the kind of goods they stole: precious metals and other things like air conditioners,” he added.
“This is unprecedented. We have again seen sporadic container thefts, but not in such quantities,” the spokesman added.
The head of the Mexican customs, Horacio Duarte Olivares, spoke of “a very serious organized crime operation”, announcing the start of the investigation as he was leaving the Mexican presidential palace.
Olivares stressed that the theft took place “in a private area” of the port.
The prosecutor’s office also announced the start of an investigation, but refused to disclose details of the amount of gold and money stolen.
