Today, Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez expressed hope that in 2023, production of energy from Turkey’s first nuclear power plant and the recently discovered gas field in the Black Sea will begin.
On the sidelines of the work of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Istanbul, Donmez stated that the construction of the first nuclear reactor in our country continues in Akuyu (in the southeastern province of Mersin). We hope to put it into operation next year. “We are also working on technological and geographical aspects for a second and a third reactor,” TRT reported.
“We made the largest discovery of an offshore gas field in 2020 in the Black Sea. “The first figures suggest that this is about 540 billion cubic meters and we are working hard to connect them to the national distribution system next year.”

“In recent years, issues such as uninterrupted energy supply, critical infrastructure protection, cybersecurity and hybrid threats have been high on NATO’s agenda,” Donmez said.
“We are facing a painful energy crisis, the impact of which will be felt for a long time and is more serious than before,” he said, adding that rising energy prices are the main reason for rising inflation.
