Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by paralysis of the facial nerve and a rash on the ear or shingles in the mouth, while it can cause dizziness or even hearing loss.

In cases of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, the previously dormant chickenpox virus – “shingles” “wakes up” and spreads to affect the facial nerve.

Symptoms may include a painful rash inside the ear canal and outside the ear, at times affecting the tongue and palate, according to the Icahn Medical School on Mount Sinai.

Due to the condition of the inner ear, patients may also suffer from dizziness (feeling dizzy or noticing that things are spinning around them), or tinnitus, ringing in the ear.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can also cause hearing loss in the paralyzed person.

As in the case of Bieber, it can also cause weakness, relaxation of the facial muscles or paralysis of the side of the person infected with the virus.

The feeling of weakness can cause difficulty in closing one eye, facial expressions and chewing, as food can leave the paralyzed side.

Treatment consists of steroids such as prednisone to reduce inflammation and pain medications. Occasionally, antiviral drugs that help the herpes family, such as acyclovir or valaciclovir, may be prescribed.

According to experts, a full recovery is not certain. But some recover in a few months. The earlier the condition is noticed, the better the chances of recovery.
