Britons are basking in the sun after months of disgustingly long months, but many are already struggling to stay cool due to rising temperatures.

And when beach days, picnics, and days at the park or Lido roll around, you’ll probably want to wear floaty ensembles and sandals, now that you’ve traded in your wardrobe for wool boots.

However, if you have the potential to become a designated driver this summer, you may be wondering if you need to bring your closed-toe shoes while holding the wheel.

So read on to find out if it’s illegal to wear it and the rules of other shoes you should follow.

Is it illegal to wear barefoot shoes or sandals?

Wearing diapers, socks, and bare feet isn’t technically illegal, but it’s not recommended and can be dangerous.

Rule 97 of the Highway Code establishes that it is necessary to guarantee that “clothing and footwear do not interfere with the proper use of the law.”

And without steer shoes that have grip and keep your feet locked in, you may not be able to use the pedals “properly.”

The Bureau of Management Standards (DSA) states that if your feet are wet, wearing bare feet, socks or sandals can put you and others at risk.

The DSA states: “Foot-friendly shoes are especially important.

“We don’t recommend wearing barefoot shoes because bare feet don’t have the same stopping power as shoes.

If you are stopped due to irregular or dangerous driving, you may be held liable without due care and attention. The biggest penalty for this is a £5,000 fine, up to 9 points on your driving license, or even a ban.

Even if it’s not that serious, you may need a fine of 100 and 3 points on the spot.

The time required to put on socks and shoes is much shorter than this.

What kind of shoes should I wear?

The RAC website has the following guidelines for proper footwear:

  • The base is 10mm thick, but don’t make it too thin or too soft.
  • Provides enough force to keep your feet from swimming in the pedals.
  • don’t be too heavy
  • Does not limit ankle movement.
  • Make it narrow enough to prevent accidental gripping of two pedals at the same time.
