The European Parliament today urged countries that have resorted to the services of the Russian private payroll company Wagner to sever all ties with the company, which is said to have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the non-binding resolution, adopted by 585 votes to 40, with 43 abstentions, MEPs “strongly urge all countries using the services of Wagner and its partners, especially the Central African Republic, to sever all ties with the company and its employees “.

The European Parliament “strongly condemns the heinous crimes” of this company. Wagner’s mercenaries have been reported in Ukraine, Syria, Sudan and the West fears they have intervened in Mali as well.

For many NGOs and journalists, Russia is using Wagner and its mercenaries to serve its interests abroad, which the Kremlin denies. “Wagner and other Russian security companies should be seen as acting on behalf of the Russian state,” he said.

In the text, MEPs also welcome the announcement made in mid-November by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, about the imposition of sanctions on Wagner. Among other things, they are calling for its members to be banned from traveling and freezing their assets in Europe.
