The largest opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, held a large rally in Skopje on Saturday night, calling for early parliamentary elections.
The rally in front of the government building in Skopje was attended by tens of thousands of opposition supporters from across the country.
VMRO-DPMNE leader Christian Mickoski described the situation in the country, especially in the economy sector, in dark colors, blaming the government for it. Mickoski said early elections were urgent in order to rid the country of the “incompetent and corrupt current government”.
The leader of the right-wing VMRO-DPMNE, who has repeatedly called the country “Macedonia”, said his party would step up pressure to oust the government of Dimitar Kovacevski and call early elections as soon as possible.
He himself opposed the proposal allegedly tabled in recent days by the French EU presidency to resolve the dispute between Sofia and Skopje, citing “capitulation” on the part of Dimitar Kovacevski’s government. Mickoski claimed that the proposal “leads to the Bulgarianization of the country in installments” and called on the government to reject it immediately, without a second thought. He made it clear that VMRO-DPMNE is not going to consent to any amendment to the country’s Constitution provided for in the proposal and as he argued it will not secure a 2/3 majority required to change the Constitution.
The government of Dimitar Kovacevski, in which, in addition to the Social Democratic Party (SDSM), which he leads, also includes the largest Albanian party in Northern Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti’s DUI rejects any possibility of early elections in the country and notes that carried out with the completion of the four years of government, in 2024.
The government of Dimitar Kovachevsky took office in mid-January. Dimitar Kovacevski became prime minister after Zoran Zaef resigned as a result of the ruling SDSM’s heavy defeat in the municipal elections in northern Macedonia last October.
