The value of the drugs is estimated at 45 million euros, according to a statement from the Belgian customs authorities.
The Belgian customs authorities announced today that they have seized it 900 kg of cocaine in the port of Antwerp. The drugs were hidden in containers with cocoa beans from Colombia.
The cocaine was distributed in bags identical to those contained in the declared goods.
The seizure took place on June 16 and the value of the drugs is estimated at 45 million eurosas stated in a statement by the Belgian customs authorities.
The port of Antwerp is a major gateway for cocaine to the European market. Drugs are often found in shipments from Latin American countries, despite traffickers’ attempts to defraud customs. In 2021, the Belgian authorities seized a total of 89.5 tonnes in the port of Antwerp, a quantity increased by 36% compared to the previous year.
Antwerp, the second largest cargo port in Europe (after Rotterdam in the Netherlands), is the largest container container in the Old Continent, estimated at 159 million tonnes per year after its merger with the port .
