Israel to dissolve parliament, prepares for 5th election in 3 years

by

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid agreed to dissolve Parliament.

The move, which is due to be made official later this Monday (20) amid a crisis in the multiparty coalition created to defeat former premier Binyamin Netanyahu, means that Israel will have its fifth election in just over three years.

Lapid is expected to take office until the next legislative election, already scheduled for October, according to Israeli media.

The dissolution of the Knesset, as Israel’s parliament is called, should be formalized next week, when it will be put to a vote. As the ruling coalition lost its majority in the House, the votes of lawmakers are expected to confirm the end of the broad front after one year in office.

Lapid and Bennett formed an unlikely alliance in June 2021 after two years of political stalemate. The movement ended the Netanyahu era, but the concert formed by parties from the far right to the left was fragile from the start.

With a timid parliamentary majority divided on important political issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and issues of state and religion, the eight-faction alliance began to fragment as a handful of members left the coalition in recent months.
