Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes in China due to catastrophic floods and landslides.

Unparalleled rains in the south and east collapsed roads and floods washed away property, cars and crops.

According to state media, around 85 rivers across the country are “flooded at warning levels” and even heavier rains are expected.

In southeastern China, a manufacturing hub in Guangdong province has suspended classes, office work and public transportation due to rising water levels and the threat of landslides.

According to state media, the heavy rains damaged 27.13 hectares of crops and destroyed 1,729 homes.

In southeast China's Fujian province, the evacuation of residents stranded in Jian'Ou is underway.

On Weibo, a microblogging similar to China’s Twitter, one user said, “I think the water comes quickly and many people don’t prepare food at home.”

500,000 people in neighboring Jiangxi province have caused massive damage to their homes.

Almost the same number were affected in Guangdong, mainly Shaoguan, Heyuan and Meizhou.

Authorities on Sunday issued the first red alert (the most severe warning) in 2022 about the possibility of mountain torrents.

The country gets regular rain during the summer, but this year’s flood levels are the highest in decades.

In 1998, when China was hit by its worst floods, more than 2,000 people died and nearly 3 million homes were destroyed, mostly along the Yangtze River, China’s mightiest.
