“One day, we will have a Bulgaria without puppets, without a mafia – a normal European country”
The Prime Minister of Bulgaria “unlocked” on Wednesday Kirill Petkov after the motion of censure was tabled in parliament. Petkov, who came to power just six months ago, has been blamed Russia and the mafia of his country. The motion of censure was voted in favor by 123 deputies against 116 who voted against a total of 240.
Petkov, 42, who came to power just six months ago, was voted in with a commitment to fight corruption, while Sofia adopted an unusually hard line against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
“This vote is a small step on the very long road ahead. I promise that we will continue the fight to win the country again and, one day, we will have a Bulgaria without puppets, without mafia – a normal European country “, reported characteristically before the National Assembly.
Posting a list of people who played a role in the fall of his government, Petkov named the Russian ambassador to Sofia and accused Moscow of influencing the collapse of the government through lawmakers from the far-right Revival party.
Wednesday’s motion of censure was rushed by the former TV talk show host who became a politician, Slavi Trifonov, whose party “There is such a people” abruptly withdrew from the fragile four-party governing coalition.
Trifonov claimed he disagreed with the budget and accused Petkov of taking a “very lenient stance” by allowing northern Macedonia to start EU accession talks.
In recent days, much of the political debate in the neighborhood has focused on whether Trifonov “pulled the chair” in government for related reasons. with the powerful Bulgarian mafia, which would lose much of its repression promised by Petkov. This suspicion was reinforced by a group of MPs from Trifonov’s party, who joined Petkov’s party precisely because they complained that their own party supported the mafia. Trifonov responded that the allegations about the mafia were “absurd”.
Petkov’s party, followed by the opposition, will have the opportunity to try to garner support for a working-class majority. If the attempt fails – which is likely – the fourth national elections since April 2021.
