Trains are still stopped in the UK today due to strikes.

Thousands of rail workers are giving speeches after negotiations failed to resolve the fierce debate over wages, jobs and conditions.

People were advised to travel by train only “when absolutely necessary”.

Commuters to the Glastonbury Festival are among the victims affected by shedding more than half of the trains to Somerset.

Rail members, Network Rail’s Sea and Transport Union (RMT) and 13 rail operators have taken over industrial operations and disrupted UK services.

Transport Minister Grant Shapps has been accused of “ruining” the negotiations that led to the second day of the strike.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “Grant Shaps confounded these negotiations by denying Network Rail access to letters threatening 2,900 members.

“Until the government releases the train with the railway network, it is impossible to reach an agreement through negotiations.

“We will continue our industrial campaign in the face of a mounting cost crisis until we reach a negotiated decision to ensure job security for members and wage increases.

Shaps responded that RMT’s claim was a “lie”.

Today’s trains are mostly limited to the main line, with about half of the network closed.

Before the strike, the government announced plans to amend the law to allow companies to hire agency workers to fill gaps in industrial activity.

Under current union law, the minister said employment agencies cannot supply workers sent to cover strikes, which may have “disproportionate effects.”

The government said the law would remove the “worst” legal restrictions.

They say this gives strike-affected businesses the freedom to take advantage of an employment business that can provide qualified temporary agency staff in a short period of time.

Network Rail welcomed this move, but unions and unions called it a “recipe for disaster”.

Meanwhile, members of the Greater Anglia drivers’ union Aslev are due to go on strike on Thursday in another dispute over compensation.

The company, which has also suffered from RMT strikes, advised passengers to travel only when necessary.

The Transport Salaried Staff Association (TSSA) has announced that Merseyrail members have received a 7.1% pay offer.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “I am disappointed that RMT has chosen to leave negotiations again without accepting the deal. We are ready to negotiate day and night and do everything we can to avoid further passenger delays. I will do my best.” .

“As a result of this senseless and premature strike, rail traffic will be the same as on Tuesday, starting late in the morning and ending in the evening (around 18:30).

“Passengers are advised to check before departure, consider when the last available train will pass, and travel by train only when necessary.

Today, only one of the five trains runs. In most cases, the main line is during the day.

British passengers are advised to only travel by train if absolutely necessary and to check the times of the first and last trains.

A spokesman for the Rail Transport Group said: “Passenger numbers remain only 80% of pre-pandemic level.

“To achieve this, we must improve to reflect the changing needs of passengers to attract more people, for example, to provide better service on Sundays.”
