Koronovi–Portugal: Welcoming the return of the measures and asking for more

by

Many Portuguese welcome the return of restrictions against Covid-19, which the government announced last night, amid rising infections and the threat of a new, highly contagious variant, with some citizens even calling for tougher measures.

The Portuguese population is much more receptive to measures against Covid and the use of vaccines than in other European countries, where recent outbreaks have occurred.

“Approve. There must be something that will slow down the dispersion. It’s not over yet and we do not know when it will end… So I think it’s very good, as we have to be very careful, “said Antonia Costa, a 62-year-old Lisbon resident.

With almost 87% vaccination rate, one of the highest in the world, Portugal mandated the mandatory use of the mask indoors, recommended teleworking where possible, making it mandatory in the first week of January, and tightened conditions for coronavirus tests.

Even fully vaccinated people will have to pass a negative test to enter nightclubs, bars and big events, and a European digital certificate will be required for hotel accommodation, gym access and indoor use. restaurants.

“I think the measures are still not enough, but let’s wait and see what is the best way to control the disease,” said Maria de Fatima, a 50-year-old Lisbon resident.

The restrictions, which include requiring all passengers arriving in Portugal to take a negative test on arrival, will take effect next Wednesday.

Joao Vallende, a 70-year-old retiree, said the measures “could be stricter, but for now, in order not to affect the economy, they make sense.”
