We often forget that animals are also victims of human warfare.
As a Ukrainian scientist announced at least 3,000 dolphins have died in the Black Sea since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
THE Ivan Rusiev, An environmental scientist in the Tuzlivski Estuaries National Park explained that the increased noise of ships, explosions and the use of powerful sonar systems could disorient dolphins, which use sound to find their way. Due to the “sound chaos” that prevails, dolphins are unable to find food, they die of starvation.
Dolphins have the ability to emit sounds, with which they communicate but also to hunt their food. When hunting, the signals increase from 1 to 500 per second to form accurate images in their brain. The sounds that are recognized can be distinguished in only three categories, one of which is the whistles, with which they can convey messages to each other but also the identifiers of each dolphin. Dolphins also use pulses, the role of which has not yet been elucidated, as well as plaits (or clicks), which are used for sound detection and are among the loudest sounds produced by marine animals.
