After work, a few beers turned into nightmares this week when city workers lost a USB drive containing the personal information of residents across the city.
In Amagasaki, northwest of Osaka, the city government said in a statement that an anonymous worker had lost a USB stick containing each person’s details after drinking.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that a man under 40 fell asleep on the street after drinking alcohol at a restaurant.
When she woke up, her bag containing the USB stick was gone.
The city government said in a statement that the man works for a company tasked with providing tax-free benefits to families.
It is known that the man went to the information center of the city administration on Tuesday, transferred the residents’ data to a USB stick, and then went out for a drink in the evening.
The data included the names, dates and addresses of 465,177 people in Amagasaki.
This disk also contains sensitive data, such as tax details, bank account names and numbers, and information about state-supported families, such as child care bills.
When the man was unable to find his car on Wednesday, he lost his property and issued a statement to police.
The government said in a statement late in the afternoon that the company had notified city officials of the loss.
The government said in a statement that the flash drive was encrypted and no data leaks had yet been confirmed.
According to the city council, the man had the right to access the data, but not the permission to transfer the data to another device.
The authorities also criticized the employees for not being able to delete the data on the flash drive after finishing work at the city hall and using safer transportation instead of personal transportation.
At a news conference Thursday, Mayor Amagasaki and other officials apologized to the city for what happened.
The city will pay eligible families promptly and provide additional information during the investigation of the case, an official statement said.
