American basketball star Britney Greener appeared in court near Moscow on Friday to discuss drug charges that could result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
At the first hearing, Greener, 31, was charged with deliberately smuggling drugs into Russia. A Phoenix Mercury player told the referee that he understood the accusation against him.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist is a descendant of the Russian Women’s National Basketball Association. She was handcuffed to the Himka city courthouse outside Moscow and was wearing a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt and lace-up sneakers.
Greener was arrested at a Russian airport in February, just a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, after authorities found a cartridge containing hemp oil in his bag.
At trial, prosecutors charged him with smuggling less than a gram of hemp oil into the country. Prosecutors alleged that Greener intentionally smuggled material into Russian territory.

As Rudd said, Greener was in the defendant’s cage with a plastic bag of cake and a bottle of mineral water.
Greener told Reuters reporters that it was difficult for him to stop him because he did not speak Russian. He also said that it was a loss because it was impossible to maintain his exercise routine.
“The US government is working hard at the highest level to repatriate British people and all US citizens illegally detained,” he added.
