The mayor of a small fishing town in Mexico wants his new girlfriend to turn his world upside down after marrying a crocodile in a white wedding dress.

Víctor Hugo Sosa and his brave companions sealed their marriage with a kiss as part of a centuries-old ritual to preserve the natural blessings of San Pedrow Amerla.

A 7-year-old reptile, known as the little princess, tied her beak to prevent unwanted scratches.

She is believed to be the Goddess of Mother Earth, and marriage is said to symbolize the bond between humans and God.

The ritual is believed to date back to pre-Hispanic times in the indigenous communities of Chongtal and Huawi in Oaxaca, southwestern Mexico.

At the ceremony on Thursday, the entertainers danced to the rhythm of traditional music.

“Naturally, we want enough rain and enough food to keep the fish in the river,” Sosa said.

Oaxaca is home to many indigenous groups who are determined to preserve their language and traditions.

The locals walked the streets of the town, holding the bride in their arms, while the man covered her with a hat.

“It makes me very happy and I am proud of my roots,” said Elia Edith Aguilar, known as the godmother who organized the wedding.

“It’s a very beautiful tradition.”
