The ritual is believed to date back to pre-Hispanic times in the indigenous communities of Chongtal and Huawi in Oaxaca, southwestern Mexico.

At the ceremony on Thursday, the entertainers danced to the rhythm of traditional music.

“Naturally, we want enough rain and enough food to keep the fish in the river,” Sosa said.

Oaxaca is home to many indigenous groups who are determined to preserve their language and traditions.

At St. Pedrow Amerla, the ritual also acknowledges Catholic spirituality, with alligators and alligators in white wedding dresses.

The locals walked the streets of the town, holding the bride in their arms, while the man covered her with a hat.

“It makes me very happy and I am proud of my roots,” said Elia Edith Aguilar, known as the godmother who organized the wedding.
