by

Demonstrations took place in various districts of Tripoli in Libya and concern the deterioration of living conditions, which is marked by continuous power outages.

Protesters gathered again in Tripoli during the night spent protesting against the worsening living conditions in Libyawhich is denoted by continuous power outages.

Demonstrations took place in various districts of the capital, according to an AFP reporter.

Young people, most of them wearing hoods, burned tires and blocked several roads, mainly the ring road of the capital and the coastal road that connects Tripoli with its western suburbs.

Protest rallies were also held in the western towns of Beni Walid and Misurata, according to images reported by local media.

Protesters are protesting power outages, which last about twelve hours on average each day amid the heatwave, and the indifference of political elites, calling for their departure.

Locked in an insurmountable political stalemate, rival leaders in Libya have been under increasing pressure for the past three days from protests in a country that remains in chaos since the 2011 ouster of Muammar Gaddafi.

On Friday in Tobruk, on the eastern edge of the country, protesters stormed the parliament with the help of a bulldozer and set it on fire.

The parliament is one of the symbols of the division in Libya between two camps, the one based in eastern Libya, led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and the government based in Tripoli.

Haftar’s side backs a rival government formed last March. Its supporters have blocked major oil facilities since mid-April as a means of exerting pressure for the removal of the Tripoli government.

UN-sponsored talks last week failed to resolve the differences between the two rival governments.

In addition to frequent power outages, protesters complain about inflation and endless queues at gas stations, while their country has Africa’s largest oil reserves.
