North Macedonia: Demonstrations continued for the third night in a row

Demonstrations continued on Monday night for the third consecutive day, in front of the government building of North Macedonia, demanding the rejection by the government of the country of the proposal submitted by the French presidency of the EU until a few days ago to resolve the differences between Skopje and Sofia.

A few thousand people took part in the demonstration, who shouted slogans such as “Down with the government”, “Bulgarians, fascists”, “Never North, only Macedonia”. Many of the demonstrators carried flags with the Vergina Sun. A small group of protesters breached the guardrails in front of the government building and threw stones, eggs and toilet paper at the police forces.

The rallies are supported by the largest opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, and other nationalist Slavic parties, which strongly oppose the “French” proposal, claiming it “favors Bulgarian demands that endanger history, language, identity and the country’s cultural heritage”.

In the meantime, as reported by North Macedonia’s state news agency, “MIA”, the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, is expected to visit Skopje on Tuesday, where he will hold talks with North Macedonia’s political actors regarding the “French” proposal. .

According to the agency, the purpose of Charles Michel’s visit to Skopje is to express the EU’s support for the “French” proposal, which is also an EU proposal, as well as to confirm the Union’s commitment to the European perspective of North Macedonia.
