“The Johnson government is collapsing,” Labor leader Keir Starmer said
The British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stated that he supports the prime minister “100%”. Boris Johnsonafter the resignation of two ministers of his government earlier, as reported by the BBC.
The Ministers of Finance and Health, Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid, tendered their resignations earlier as Johnson himself sought to apologize for the latest sexual misconduct scandal involving a member of his government last week. Johnson admitted his mistake but said he had not realized that Chris Pincher, the former deputy in charge of party discipline, was unfit for the job.
“In retrospect, it was a mistake. I apologize to anyone affected by this.”Johnson told reporters.
Downing Street’s initial, vague response to this new crisis was heavily criticized. The prime minister’s office initially claimed Johnson was unaware of the earlier allegations against Pincher when he appointed him deputy head of party discipline in February. But when it was revealed he had been aware since 2019, he said Pincher’s appointment was “a mistake” and apologised.
The Labor leader Keir Starmer commented that it was clear that Johnson’s government was collapsing. “After all this sloppiness, scandals and failures, it is clear that the government is now collapsing,” he said in a statement.
