According to a source close to the fire department in the area, “former prime minister Abe appears to be in a state of cardiorespiratory arrest,” public broadcaster NHK reported, using Japanese authorities’ terminology when someone’s death remains to be determined by a medical examiner.

Neither the police nor the fire department were able to officially confirm this information when contacted by AFP.

According to the Kyodo news agency, the perpetrator of the attack was arrested and the weapon he used was confiscated. He is a 42-year-old man, according to the same source.
