by

President Jair Bolsonaro joined the list of world leaders who mourned the assassination of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot dead this Friday (8) during a campaign rally.

He said in a Twitter post that he had declared three days of official mourning after what he described as “unjustifiable cruelty”. He also thanked Abe for his friendship with Brazil and called for the crime to be punished strictly. “We are with Japan.”

Bolsonaro traveled to Japan in the first year of his government, in 2019, when Abe, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, was still in office. At the time, they talked about a possible partnership agreement between Mercosur.
