Canada: Sanctions on Patriarch Kirill – Zakharova’s reaction

by

Ottawa announced a new package of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine

Canada imposed sanctions today on Patriarch Kirillthe leader of its Orthodox Church of Russiaas part of a series of measures taken by the country aimed at “agents of disinformation and Russian propaganda”, on the occasion of the invasion of Ukraine.

These measures were immediately criticized by the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharovawhich stated that “sanctions against the Patriarch would only be imposed by Satanists”.

Patriarch Kirill has put the Church at the service of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he calls a “miracle” as he shares his vision of a conservative, sovereign Russia and supports the war in Ukraine.

Except for Canada, the United Kingdom it also imposed sanctions on the 75-year-old Patriarch in June. The European Union, however, avoided including him in the “black list” of persons on which it imposed sanctions.

On the sidelines of the G20 meeting hosted in Bali, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie announced that her government has decided to impose sanctions on 29 individuals and 15 entities controlled by the Russian state “who participate in disinformation efforts.” These sanctions include Shubatovich Gasparian, the head of the international department of the Russian media group RT. In recent months, Ottawa has banned RT’s channels from broadcasting in Canada, and Moscow has retaliated by closing the offices of Canadian public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada.

“The Russian propaganda machine must be held accountable for its lies. Canada is determined to fight misinformation, everywhere and always,” Jolie said.

Overall, the Ottawa has imposed sanctions on more than 1,150 persons and entities in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
