Biden: Considering Abortion ‘Public Health Emergency’

by

The US president signed an executive order on Friday to make it easier to access abortion services

The president of the USA Joe Biden said today that he has asked his administration to consider whether it has the authority to declare a public health emergency related to abortion, following the Supreme Court’s historic decision that overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling on abortion.

The statement comes after Biden on Friday signed one executive order to facilitate access to termination of pregnancy services.

Biden was on his way to a bike ride near his residence in Delaware when he stopped to speak to reporters, who asked him if he was considering declaring a public health emergency over access to abortions. The president responded that he had asked his staff to consider “whether I have the authority” and what the implications would be.

Biden, one Democratichas come under pressure from his own party to take action after last month’s landmark ruling overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that overturned nearly 50 years of protections for women’s reproductive rights.

Biden said today that his goal was to codify abortion rights through legislation and delivered a message to abortion rights protesters gathered outside the White House.

“Keep protesting. Keep speaking your mind. It is extremely important,” he said. “We can do many things to facilitate women’s rights.”
