As many as 2,800 firefighters were mobilized yesterday Sunday to bring it under control series of forest fires which are raging in many areas of Portugal, where o heat prompted the government to step up the mobilization of emergency services by declaring the state machinery on “standby” to deal with emergencies.

‘Peak of extreme weather’ is coming
For the third day in a row, the Portuguese fire brigade was confronted with around a hundred fires across the Iberian country, while “the peak of the extreme weather conditions” had not yet arrived, Mr Fernandes said.
The thermometers have already shown 44° Celsius in places, but the Portuguese National Meteorological Service predicts that the temperature will rise even more around the middle of this week.
