The Turkish president said that the war between Ukraine and Russia must end with a lasting and just peace, noting that Turkey is ready to contribute to the revival of the negotiation process.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, a while agoaccording to Anadolu, in order to discuss grain exports, but also the latest developments in Syria.
The phone call between the two leaders comes at a time when global food prices are rising, as the war in Ukraine, the world’s biggest grain supplier, fuels food security concerns.
According to the Turkish news agency, Erdogan emphasized that “The time has come for the United Nations to act for creating a safe corridor for grain exports in the Black Sea region”.
At the same time, he allegedly repeated that the war between Ukraine and Russia must end with a lasting and just peace noting that Turkey is ready to contribute to the revival of the negotiation process.
Erdogan also urged Putin to approve it extending the validity of the mechanism that allows the United Nations to transfer humanitarian aid to Syria; through a border crossing in Turkey, in areas not controlled by the Damascus regime. Russia vetoed Friday’s U.N. Security Council vote on extending that mechanism for a year, arguing against continuing aid transfers for only six months, which the West rejects.
Accordingly, the Kremlin says the two leaders discussed coordinating their efforts on grain exports and the safety of navigation in the Black Sea. These talks, added the announcement of the Russian presidency, took place in view of the Russian-Turkish summit that will be held “in the near future”.
