An eight-year-old boy, shot in a mass shooting that killed seven people, woke up from a coma to find himself “paralyzed from the waist down.”
Cooper Roberts’ spinal cord was amputated in a July 4 attack in Chicago’s Highland Park.
His mother and twin brothers were one of 40 injured when a gunman on a rooftop fired into a crowd during the Independence Day parade.
On Friday, Cooper regained consciousness and his ventilator was removed, but he is still in a lot of pain.
Doctors don’t think it’s damaging his brain, but it’s unlikely he’ll die again.
“This will be a new common sense for him to move forward,” family spokesman Anthony Roysi told CBS News.
“He seems to have a lot of trouble moving forward, especially walking.”
She added that the family “focused their energy on Cooper” and “he is fighting as hard as he can.”
Now when he woke up, Cooper asked to meet his dog, George, and his twin brother, Luke. And he rushed to the hospital with debris.
Luke was released after the doctor removed some of the remains, but was unable to remove all of it.
The boy’s mother, Kylie Roberts, suffered a gunshot wound to her leg and ankle, and his father, Jason, was uninjured.
Klee had two surgeries due to an injury and wanted to be with Cooper at a children’s hospital, so she was released earlier than her doctor recommended.
A family friend has set up a GoFundMe page for medical expenses and has raised over $1.1 million (£914,000) so far.
Cooper is described as a “very active” kid with a passion for baseball and is a huge fan of the Milwaukee Brewers.
During Friday’s game, the team brought out a jersey with Roberts’ name on the back as a tribute.
The shooting suspect, Robert Climo III, was arrested and charged with seven first-class murders after a brief police chase on July 4.
Eric Reinhardt, a Lake County attorney, said he will continue to be indicted on dozens more charges and expects to be sentenced to life in prison.
Investigators say the adjacent Highwood Klimo legally purchased five weapons and planned an attack over the course of several weeks.
He climbed onto the roof of the business along the parade route and fired shots, authorities added.

They say he fled with a fleeing parade crowd and then drove to Madison, Wisconsin, where he was considering a second attack.
He returned to the Highland Park area and police discovered his car.
The question remains whether Climo can legally buy firearms in Illinois.

Dale Miller, 70, was walking his dog, Milo, when the shooting occurred. He did not participate in this year’s parade, but he said he lived about 100 meters away and heard gunshots.
