Eight candidates are vying for the votes of their fellow Tory MPs this afternoon to advance to tomorrow’s second round of Boris Johnson’s succession to the party leadership and UK Prime Ministership.
Today’s Tory caucus vote takes place from 1.30 to 3.30 in the afternoona local, with the results announced at 5pm by the head of the relevant party body, the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady.
Any candidates who receive fewer than 30 votes are excluded from Thursday’s second ballot.
After Thursday, when the candidate with the fewest votes will be eliminated, starting on Monday, as many votes will be held as are needed to leave the final pair of candidates that will be put to the judgment of the base of the Conservative Party.
The final duo will have occurred no later than Thursday, July 21. The result of the summer postal voting process by party members to choose the winner will be announced on September 5.
The eight Conservative Party MPs vying for the party leadership and the Prime Ministership are Rishi Sunak. Penny Mordant, Liz Truss, Tom Tugenhut, Kemi Beidenock, Nadeem Zahawi, Jeremy Hunt and Suella Braverman.
