At least four people were killed and nineteen injured today in Istanbul by stormy winds sweeping the area, the government said.

“Four people, including a foreign national, were killed and 19 of our fellow citizens were injured, three of them seriously,” the Istanbul government said in a press release, citing a report by the government’s Disaster Management Agency (Afad).

A video broadcast by the Turkish news agency DHA shows two men and a pram on the ground, under the rubble of a construction site, as if an explosion had taken place in the Esenyurt district, in the western part of Istanbul.

A woman was killed in another district in the western part of Istanbul, after she was hit in the face by a beam, which came off the roof of the apartment building where she lived, according to the DHA.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, and called on the city’s residents to be vigilant in the face of similar accidents, with “falling trees and beams” causing winds of up to 130 degrees. kilometers per hour.

Other images posted on social media and broadcast by Turkish media show a roof and part of a balcony swept away by strong winds, as well as trucks overturned on an avenue near Istanbul.

Dozens of roofs and almost 200 trees were uprooted due to the storm and maritime transport was suspended in the Bosphorus, the municipal authority announced.

Five planes that were going to land in Istanbul changed direction to the airports of Ankara and Izmir, NTV broadcasts.
