United Kingdom: Extension of booster dose to all adults – 3 months after the second dose

by

London, Thanassis Gavos

The extension and acceleration of the coronavirus booster dose program has been recommended by the UK Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee.

In particular, the third dose is now recommended for all adults, 18 years and older. So far the third dose is given to residents aged 40 and over and the most vulnerable.

The committee also ruled that the booster dose could be given after at least three months of an absolute second dose. In other words, the period that should have elapsed between the second and third installment is reduced by half, from the semester that was valid until now.

The second dose is also recommended for minors aged 12-15, also three months after the first dose. Until now it was given to ages 16 and up.

The third dose is still from the Pfizer vaccine or half the dose of Moderna.

The British government is expected to accept the recommendations so that there is more protection against the Omicron variant.

Deputy Chief of Staff Jonathan Van Tam said in his presentation that “if the effectiveness of the vaccines is reduced by Omicron as it seems quite possible, the biggest impact will probably be on preventing infection, but hopefully there will be less impact on preventing serious illness.” .
