The 358 members of the Conservative Party’s parliamentary group are invited to choose between the six candidates to succeed Boris Johnson who qualified from yesterday’s vote at noon today.
The second vote takes place between 11.30 and 13.30 London time and the result will be announced at 15.00.
The candidate with the fewest votes will be eliminated from the continuation, which will include new votes from Monday until the final pair of contenders remain.
At yesterday’s vote Rishi Sunak received 88 votes, Penny Mordant 67, Liz Truss 50, Kemi Beidenock 40, Tom Tugenhut 37 and Suella Braverman 32. Nadeem Zahawi (26) and Jeremy Hunt (18) were eliminated with fewer than 30 votes. .
After yesterday’s result and a new poll among Conservative Party members again giving Ms Mordot a clear lead, the former Defense Secretary has become the clear favorite for the party leadership and the Prime Ministership according to the latest bookmakers’ predictions.
The poll is considered important because the new Prime Minister will be chosen between the two final candidates by members of the Conservative Party.
Also, the 67 votes won by Penny Mordant yesterday caused a sensation, as only nearly 30 MPs had publicly declared their support for her. The 49-year-old politician is considered to have appeal across all wings of the party, with political editors commenting that it is clear that significant momentum has developed in her favour.
Of the excluded candidates, however, Mr. Hunt announced that he will support the former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak. In theory, Foreign Minister Liz Truss also has a large pool of votes for the next rounds, as the right wing of the Tories for which she is running gave 72 votes to Kemi Bedenock and Suella Braverman, although votes from the pro-Brexit faction were also received by Ms. Mordant.
