The US Treasury Secretary called on the international community to hold Russia accountable for the war

The US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said today that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine is causing negative repercussions around the world and that Russian officials they have no place at the Group of 20 (G20) summit this week.

Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of a meeting of G20 economic officials, Yellen called on the international community to hold Russia accountable for the war and its dramatic impact on energy prices and growing food insecurity.

Yellen dodged a question about whether she would withdraw when Russian officials spoke, as she and other Western leaders did at the last such meeting in Washington in April, but said she would condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “in the strongest possible terms.” ».

“I think I made it clear that it cannot be business as usual in terms of Russia’s participation in these meetings,” he said, adding that he looked forward to welcoming Ukraine’s finance minister to those meetings.

Yellen said she will continue to push hard for ceiling on the price of Russian oilwhich, according to her, will help reduce energy prices and maintain global oil flows after European and possibly British and American sanctions on Russian oil shipments come into effect at the end of the year.

Failure to adopt such measures, she said, would exclude a significant amount of Russian oil, which would drive oil prices higher, Yellen added, while expressing hope that China and India would realize it was in their interest to participate. .

“It will give Russia a way to continue exporting oil … and help consumers around the world, including those in China and India, avoid a peak in global oil prices,” he said.
