Alex Murdoch is being prosecuted for the murder of his 22-year-old son and his 52-year-old wife – 54-year-old drug addict
A prominent American lawyer, who has been at the center of a complex case for about a year, is being prosecuted today for the murder of his wife and son.
Alex Murdoch, 54, allegedly killed his wife, Maggie, with a rifle and one of his sons, Paul, using a handgun on June 7, 2021, according to the indictment handed up by a South Carolina Grand Jury .
That day, Murdoch called the police, explaining that he had found Magee, 52, and his son, a 22-year-old college student, dead, riddled with bullets outside the family’s cottage.
Alex Murdoch, who comes from a well-known family of wealthy and well-known lawyers, denied any involvement in the crime and was not considered a suspect at the time.
Three months later, in September, the spotlight fell on him again when he attempted to end his own life so his other son could collect his life insurance. Under duress, he confessed that he had asked a former client to kill him so that his son could get a $10 million payout. The clumsy assassin shot him in the head, but unfortunately for Murdoch, he survived.
The would-be autocrat’s lawyer argued at the time that Murdoch had been addicted to opioids for 20 years and that he “broke” after the deaths of his wife and son.
The police and the prosecutor’s office, however, began to examine his cases in depth. Month by month, he faced more than 70 fraud prosecutions and was eventually remanded in prison. It is alleged, among other things, that he misappropriated the money of the clients of the law firm where he worked, a total of 8.5 million dollars. He is also charged with money laundering in an opioid trafficking case.
Authorities reopened the case into his housekeeper’s death in 2018. At the time, Alex Murdoch claimed the woman fell down the stairs after tripping over the dog and her death was ruled an accident.
Until now, they had yet to deal with the death of his wife and son. According to American media, he was “betrayed” by the blood stains found on his clothes and his mobile phone, which places him at the scene at the time of the murder.
The fact that Murdoch came from a powerful family (his father, grandfather and great-grandfather were prosecutors in South Carolina for a combined 87 years) fueled much speculation in the local media about a cover-up. The press revealed, among other things, that his son Paul was involved in a boating accident in 2019 in which a young woman was killed. Paul Murdoch was charged with “driving while intoxicated causing death” but a trial date was never set. With his death, two years later, this case was shelved.
