The five-year-old boy reportedly shot and killed his eight-year-old brother in what appears to be an accident.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, several children were in the house with their mother when the ammunition went off Thursday afternoon.
The officer responded to a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. on Shannon Valley Road, 2700 blocks near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and found an eight-year-old boy unconscious in the home.
A court at the scene ruled that the boy was dead.
Authorities have recovered some weapons from the house. Investigators and prosecutors worked to determine if there was negligence and if the gun was out of the children’s reach.
How safe was the gun? Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods told KARK4 News.
“How did the five-year-old boy get, fire and fire a gun if it was reported to be safe?”
Woods said the shooting was treated as an accident.
“This is a tragic event that should have been prevented. It cannot be emphasized that the weapon must be firmly fixed and always out of the reach of children,” he said in a rice field.
“Gun owners who have not properly serviced their firearms are seconds away from one of these tragedies occurring at home.
The family was seen outside the home as the officer conducted an ongoing investigation.
The boy’s body was taken to a state crime lab for inspection.
In accordance with state protocol, the Department of Human Services was notified of the shooting and social workers assessed the welfare of other children in the home.
Woods told the commercial that the five-year-old and four other siblings would be taken to an agent and placed under the control of their aunt.
