A white woman who accused black teenager Emmett Till of taking improper action that led to his lynching in Mississippi in 1955 wanted to equate herself with the killer or kill him. I denied it.
In her unpublished memoir, Carolyn Brian Donam wrote that she did not know what would happen to Till, who was 14 years old when she was brutally kidnapped, murdered, and dumped in the river.
Donam was 21 years old when Tilly was killed. The now 87-year-old Associated Press’s subsequent memoir, “I Am More Than a Hissing Wolf,” provides the longest account of the incident to date.
The 99-page manuscript was published only after the discovery of Donam’s kidnapping warrant in 1955, but was not created.
In her memoirs, Donam wrote that she tried to help Till if her husband and sister-in-law found her and brought her in for identification at midnight.
Donam reportedly denied that the child was a louse because the man did not want to hurt her.
“I didn’t want to hurt Emmet and I didn’t know what I was planning for him so I couldn’t stop him from hurting him,” Donam said in a manuscript written by my sister-in-law. I have written. I tried to defend Roy. “He’s not that person. He’s not. Take him home.”
Thiel, who was kidnapped with a gun from his parents’ house, was left to the men.
Donham said she “always felt like a victim like Emmet” and “turned her life around and honestly paid” for what happened to her.
“I always pray that God bless Emmet’s family. I’m so sorry this has affected his family,” he said at the end of the manuscript.
At the time, Donam’s husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, JW Miram, were acquitted of the murder, but later confessed to the murder in a magazine interview.
AP obtained a memoir from a historian at the Mississippi Center for Investigative Journalism.
Till’s cousin Deborah Watts, who runs the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, emphasized Donam’s involvement in the failed orders and memoirs.
“I truly believe that these events cannot be ignored by Mississippi authorities,” he said.
In December, the US Department of Justice completed an investigation into Donam’s involvement in the murder.
