At least six people were killed after a heavy sandstorm in the United States caused a pileup of 21 vehicles.
Strong Montana winds kicked up dust, leaving many drivers with “zero visibility.”
The accident reported a 60 mph gust on Interstate 90 near Hardin.
The accident was reported on Friday at 4:28 p.m. local time.
Minutes after the accident, the nearby Bighorn Country Airport recorded a wind gust of up to 62 mph. This is down 40mph from 15 minutes earlier.
Highway patrol officials said the number of injured was still unknown and additional emergency services from another city had been requested for help.
Emergency services responded to the scene on Friday after a car was seen crashing into a grassy bank.
Due to the accident, dozens of other vehicles were still on the road.
The sandstorms were caused by a recent combination of dry temperatures and strong winds.
“It looks like it was the high winds that caused the zero visibility sandstorm,” said Janelson of the Montana Highway Patrol.
In bad weather on Friday, visibility is expected to drop to less than 400 meters.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte said he was “deeply saddened” by the news of “mass casualties.”
“Please join me in praying to lift up the victims and their loved ones. I am grateful for the services of the first responders.”
