“The Russians hit the central part of the city… So far we know of at least one civilian dead”he wrote on the messaging app Telegram.
Rescuers are on the scene. A photo posted online by Kramatorsk Mayor Oleksandr Khodsarenko and the city council shows flames coming from a residential building.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, has not yet commented on the situation in Kramatorsk. It denies targeting civilians.
After failing to capture the capital Kyiv at the beginning of the invasion, the Russia turned to a devastating bombing campaign to strengthen and expand its control over southern and eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said they expected Kramatorsk, a city of at least 150,000 people before the Russian invasion, to become one of the main focus points for Russia’s offensive in eastern Ukraine.
THE Ukraine says Russian forces have stepped up long-range strikes on targets far from the front, killing large numbers of civilians. Moscow claims it is hitting military targets.
