The head of the CIA considers the Chinese invasion of Taiwan a matter of time

China is learning lessons from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and is ready to use force against Taiwan, the head of the CIA said Wednesday.

Speaking at a security forum in Aspen, Colorado, CIA chief William Burns said he believed the question was not whether the Chinese leadership might resort to violence to control Taiwan, but “how and when does”.

Referring to the war in Ukraine, Burns estimated that about 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed and another 45,000 wounded since the invasion began on February 24.

“The latest US intelligence estimates are about 15,000 dead and perhaps three times as many wounded. So these are pretty significant losses” for the Russian military, the CIA chief said.

“And the Ukrainians have suffered as well — maybe a little less. But, you know, these are significant losses,” Burns added.
