France: Far-right Zemour announces candidacy for 2022 presidential election

by

The far-right essayist Eric Zemour announced in a videotaped message that he will run in the 2022 French presidential election.

“It’s time to reform and save France. That is why I decided to run for the presidency,” Zemour said in a statement announcing his candidacy in a video message posted on YouTube and broadcast on French television.

Ubiquitous in public debate since September, the former journalist saw his popularity rise, which alarmed Marin Lepen, the National Alarm candidate (far right), whose presence in the second round has so far been taken for granted.

But the essayist’s informal campaign is already facing difficulties. In the polls he remains stagnant, he is criticized for lack of organization and in his tours in the province he is disapproved.

A few days ago, he raised his middle finger in return for a gesture passing through Marseille (southern France), an event whose photos caused a stir, forcing Zemour to admit that he behaved in an “inelegant” way.

According to a poll broadcast the day before yesterday, Sunday, in the first round (to be held on April 10, 2022) 14 to 15% of the voting intentions are credited, behind Marin Le Pen (around 19%) and President Emanuel Macron (25%) .
