People who repeatedly refuse to avoid the vaccination call for Covid-19 in Austria after the vaccination becomes mandatory may face fines of up to 7,000 euros or even several weeks in prison, according to a draft leaked to the media.
Those who resist vaccination in Austria may soon face severe punishment, according to a leaked draft law on the protection of the leaked Covid-19 vaccine, which was seen by the Austrian newspaper Die Presse. If passed, the legislation, which will enter into force in February, will apply to both Austrian citizens and permanent residents.
According to the bill, anyone who refuses to attend a scheduled vaccination appointment will receive a formal call from the local authorities. If a person fails to show up, then they will be called again within the next four weeks.
If the second formal request is ignored, the person will face a fine of 3,600 euros (or four weeks in prison). The fine will be increased to 7,200 euros for those who have already been fined twice for violating the compulsory vaccination.
Exceptions are only allowed for those who cannot be vaccinated due to “risk to life or health”, as well as for pregnant women and children up to 12 years of age. The bill also states that booster vaccinations will be mandatory. The Austrian Ministry of Health is in charge of regulating the intervals between vaccinations and possible vaccine combinations, according to the draft.
The government will also decide who is considered “vaccinated” and whether people who have recovered from Covid-19 should also be counted as “vaccinated”. However, no one would be forcibly taken to a vaccination center or forced to be vaccinated against their will, Die Presse reported.
The text of the bill, which will be discussed in the chancellery office today, Tuesday, may change, the Austrian media note. If passed, the legislation is expected to remain in force for at least three years.
