The decision is based on an executive order of the Russian President Vladimir Putin on measures (countermeasures) in response to hostile actions of foreign states which was approved on April 23, 2021. It is envisaged to limit the possibility (up to a complete ban) in these states to hire Russian employees for the embassies, consulates and delegations of state bodies their.

In this context, from now on Greece has a limit of 34 people, Denmark 20, Slovakia 16, while Slovenia and Croatia will not be able to hire any employees in their embassies and consulates.

The press service of the Russian government notes that the list “is not final and, taking into account the ongoing hostile actions of foreign states (…) it may be expanded.”

Earlier, in May 2021, restrictions were imposed on US and Czech diplomatic missions.

In early March, the Russian government drew up a list of foreign states and territories “committing hostile acts against the country, Russian companies and citizens” to which Russian individuals and companies can repay their debts in rubles. This list includes European Union member states, Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, Singapore, USA, Taiwan, Ukraine, Japan and more.
