“Sanctions against Moscow are ineffective” claimed the Hungarian Prime Minister
He “sticks out his tongue” in the EU Viktor Orban. In a speech in Romania, Hungary’s prime minister said that European strategy must now aim at peace rather than winning war.
He added that the European Union needed a “new strategy” to deal with the war in Ukraine as “sanctions against Moscow are ineffective”, a day after his Foreign Minister Peter Szijardo visited Moscow to discuss new gas supplies with the Kremlin .
The stance taken by the populist, Orban’s nationalist government has historically made Hungary the most Moscow-friendly member country of NATO and the European Union.
Viktor Orbán is in conflict with the European Union over the systematic violation of the rule of law in Hungary. Since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine, Budapest has maintained an ambivalent attitude towards Moscow, initially condemning the Russian invasion but vetoing sanctions on imports of Russian gas and oil and thus forcing the Union to soften the package of sanctions against Russia in the energy sector.
With Moscow, Budapest continues to maintain privileged relations regarding its energy supply.
