A fire broke out on the way the train crossed the bridge, evacuating hundreds of passengers, and one of the panicked passengers jumped into the river through a window.
The fire broke out on the Orange Line of the Boston Metro Boston Transit Authority, which runs from Oak Grove, Massachusetts to Jamaica Plain. A fire broke out around 6:45 a.m. when the train crossed the bridge over the Mystic River.
Most of the 200 passengers were evacuated from the train on foot after a power outage on the third track, according to MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak.
However, some passengers were forced to remove the windows of their smoke-filled cars to escape near the flames.
“There was a gentleman desperately trying to open the emergency exit, but the door didn’t open,” he said. Jennifer Thomson Sullivan told The Boston Globe. “From that moment on, people started shooting through the windows.
According to Foftak, the panicked passenger broke four windows.
“They didn’t stop to consider the third track, or if another train was coming in the opposite direction,” Thomson-Sullivan said. People just asked for it.
Only one passenger jumped into the river: an unidentified woman who refused to help rescuers.
“An unidentified female passenger jumped off the bridge into the river,” Summerville Fire Chief Charles Breen told The Boston Globe.
“Our warship was in the river for training and immediately headed there.” The woman refused to get on the boat. She was given a life jacket and she continued to swim to shore…and she was gone. “
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker called the incident a “huge failure.”
“Everyone gets an F today. Let’s be real,” he told WHDH. “Such an incident is horrible and unacceptable and puts a huge handicap on T’s regular job.”
