John Doe, the man behind the Panama Papers leak, says he fears revenge from Russians who want him dead, in an interview published today in the magazine Der Spiegel.
In his first interview since uncovering the global tax evasion and fraud scheme, he says he has evidence of criminal financial transactions by top Russian officials and their allies that helped finance the war in Ukraine.

These companies make “possible these atrocities and many more“, he says, adding that “Putin is a bigger threat to the United States than Hitler ever was, and shell companies are his best friends».
“Are you afraid for your life?” Der Spiegel asks him. “It’s a risk I live with since the Russian government has said they want me dead,” replies ‘Joe Doe’ explaining that Russian state network RT aired a two-part TV movie about the Panama Papers starring “John Doe”who “He has suffered a head injury from the torture».
“It was strange and eloquent…we have seen other individuals who had relationships with offshore accounts resort to murder“, he states, using as examples the murders of Maltese journalist Daphne Garuana Galizia and Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak.
“The Panama Papers implicate so many different international criminal organizations, some of which have ties to governments, that it is hard to imagine how certain my identification can be».
The Panama Papers joins the series of revelations through the leak of data on financial transactions by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, Inc. (ICIJ).
