The Kremlin’s war is having a dramatic impact on global food security, European Council President Charles Michel said, speaking at the Summit of First Ladies and First Gentlemen on Ukraine, hosted by Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska. He welcomed the agreement by Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the United Nations to unblock grain and fertilizer exports, stressing that it must be implemented quickly and in good faith.

Mr. Michel referred to his visit to Odessa, noting that millions of tons of grain are stuck in containers and ships because of the Russian blockade of the Black Sea, but also because of Russian tanks, bombs and mines.

“We must clear up Russia’s lies about the causes of the global food crisis,” the President of the European Council underlined, stating that “Russia’s war is solely responsible for this crisis.” He also clarified that the EU has not imposed sanctions on the agricultural sector in Russia.

In addition, he noted that those responsible for crimes and violations of human rights will be held accountable.
