Russia also silenced the Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta newspaper

by

The Novaya Gazeta newspaper is known for its investigations into the corruption of Russian elites and gross human rights violations in Russia.

The Russian authorities blocked today the website of its new edition of independent newspaper Novaya Gazetawhich was forced to cease publication in March amid a Kremlin crackdown on critical voices.

On July 15, the editorial staff of Novaya Gazeta published a printed magazine accompanied by an electronic version on a new website under the title Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta. The first sheet contains analyzes of Vladimir Putin’s totalitarianism and ideology.

But, a week later, Russia’s telecommunications watchdog blocked the new website at the request of the prosecution. Today, the website is not accessible in Russia without a VPN network.

“Our website was killed in its infancy. We held for seven days and nine hours,” the editorial group said in a statement, clarifying that Russian prosecutors accuse it – without evidence – of defaming the Russian armed forces, a new offense introduced in March to silence the slightest criticism of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“So far, there is no demand against our print edition. Well, we will continue to prepare our second sheet”, clarifies the editorial team of Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta, calling on its readers not to be discouraged.

The newspaper Novaya Gazeta, a pillar of investigative journalism in Russia, known for her investigations into the corruption of Russian elites and for the gross violations of human rights in Russia, it was forced at the end of March to discontinue both its print and electronic editions.

The Russian authorities threatened her with a ban because she did not comply with the “foreign agents” law. After the publication was stopped, part of the editorial team left Russia and publishes the new Novaya Gazeta in electronic form from Western Europe.

Its director, Dmitry Muratov, was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
