Prime Minister Boris Johnson has set a target of administering a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine to the entire adult population of the United Kingdom by the end of January.
As he said, vaccines are “the best defense” against the Omicron variant and for this reason the government will speed up the vaccination program.
Mr Johnson announced that the third tranche would be given to another 150 pharmacies across the country, in addition to those already operating as vaccination centers, 400 soldiers and volunteers would be on hand to assist with the vaccination program, more vaccination centers would be opened in hospitals and “Temporary vaccination centers will appear like Christmas trees.”
He stressed that despite the feeling of fatigue of the population from the pandemic, the situation is “incalculably better” compared to last year, due to the success of the vaccination program.
He reiterated that the measures taken were “proportionate and precautionary” and gave scientists time to “break the Omicron code”.
During a press conference on Downing Street, where the announcements were made, Health Minister Sajid Javid added that it was “more important than ever” for citizens to come in order of priority for the booster dose.
He expressed optimism that antiviral drugs will also be effective against the variant.
