They are put into effect by the competent services and water supply companies in England the initial stages of potential countermeasures drought. These measures initially consist of appeals to the public to do responsible use of water.

The move by the Environment Agency and the companies comes after officials warned that if unusually hot and dry weather conditions continue over the next few months, then England could face drought in August.

THE heat and humidity spring and the first half of summer have already depleted water supplies in rivers and reservoirs, sending England into ‘prolonged dry weather’, the first of the four stages of a drought state.

The second stage, that of drought, has been experienced by the country in 2018-19 and 2011-12, when water companies had the right to limit water supply to households and businesses.

The National Union of Farmers has also expressed concern, saying that the hot weather and lack of rain threatens crops.

England went through a historic heat wave a few days ago, recording for the first time a temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius. Forecasters are warning that a new heat wave, with temperatures lower than the record but still higher than usual, is likely from the weekend and into next week.

However, they predict an increased chance of rain in mid-August.
