Myanmar’s junta has executed four democracy activists, charged them with terrorism and killed scores of people in fledgling states.

After the man was executed in a locked room, he was put to death for the first time since 1988, despite seeking amnesty around the world.

Democracy activist Kyaw Min Yew, 53, and former hip-hop star Phyo Zeya Thaw, 41, said a military general said killing and executing at least 50 people could prevent further attacks.

Two other men, Hla Myo Aung and Aung Tura Zaw, were found guilty of torturing and killing a woman they believed to be military informants.

State media reported that four people were sentenced to death following legal proceedings for directing and organizing “violent and inhumane accomplices in terrorist assassinations.”

But Thaw’s wife, Thazin Nyunt Aung, said she was not aware of his death and is still trying to confirm it.

The assassination was an event that triggered a crackdown on democracy activists following a military takeover in February.

The United Nations special rapporteur for human rights, Thomas Andrews, said he was outraged and devastated by the death penalty.

And Elaine Pearson of Human Rights Watch said the trial was grossly unfair and politically motivated.

“The junta’s barbarism and ruthless disregard for human life are aimed at delaying opposition to the coup,” he said.

“Killing them is a way of ruling society through fear,” said Aung Myo Min, a poor Myanmar government.
